This is what refusing displacement looks like

For years, South Berkeley residents have been pushed out of their own community — not because they chose to leave, but because staying became impossible. St. Paul A.M.E. Church chose to respond differently. Instead of selling their land to the highest bidder, they partnered with Community Housing Development Corporation, a regional, Black-led nonprofit, to build something permanent: 50 units of 100% affordable housing for the people who belong here.

“Like the city and county, we have a moral obligation to contribute to region-wide efforts in ending the housing crisis.”

Rev. Anthony L. Hughes

On July 30, 2026, that vision breaks ground. Your donation helps fund the groundbreaking ceremony that marks this milestone — and contributes directly to the development costs that close the gap between funding secured and 50 front doors.

Who is behind this project

Community Housing Development Corporation (CHDC) is a Richmond-based, regional Black-led nonprofit housing developer that has spent decades creating affordable housing opportunities across the Bay Area. Executive Director Donald Gilmore leads the organization’s mission to build communities where everyone has a place to belong.

St. Paul A.M.E. Church of Berkeley, led by Rev. Anthony L. Hughes, MDiv, has served South Berkeley for generations. The church’s decision to contribute its own land to this project is a declaration that community comes before profit — and that faith means showing up for the people who need it most.
